The Immigration and Citizenship Agency (ICA) has officially launched Somalia's Electronic Visa system, known as the Electronic Travel Authorisation System (E-Visa/ETAS) — a landmark step in the modernisation of the country's border and entry management.
Effective 1 September 2025, all foreign nationals wishing to travel to Somalia are required to apply for their entry authorisation online, in advance of their journey. The move replaces slower, paper-based procedures with a single, secure digital platform that can be accessed from anywhere in the world.
Under the new arrangement, travellers complete their application before departure rather than on arrival. This allows the relevant authorities to review each request in advance, and gives visitors the certainty of holding a valid authorisation before they begin their journey.
The E-Visa/ETAS system is designed to deliver three core benefits. For travellers, it offers a faster, simpler and more transparent application process, with clear requirements and online tracking. For the country, it strengthens border security by allowing authorities to screen and process applications before arrival. And for the Agency, it improves efficiency and eases congestion at ports of entry.
The introduction of an electronic travel authorisation also supports Somalia's wider ambitions in tourism, trade and investment. A modern, predictable entry process makes the country more accessible to business travellers, investors, diaspora visitors and tourists, while ensuring that movement across the nation's borders remains safe and well-regulated.
Applications are submitted through the official portal at etas.gov.so, where applicants can complete their details, upload the required documents, and receive their authorisation electronically. To avoid delays, visitors are encouraged to apply well ahead of their planned travel dates, to ensure their passport meets validity requirements, and to keep a copy of their approved authorisation for presentation on arrival.
Travellers are advised to rely only on the official platform at etas.gov.so and on communications from the Immigration and Citizenship Agency for accurate, up-to-date information, and to be cautious of unofficial websites or agents.
The launch reflects the Agency's wider commitment to digital transformation and to bringing Somalia's immigration services in line with international standards — making travel to the country safer, more orderly and more welcoming.
