Types of Visas

The Immigration and Naturalization Directorate issues visas to all foreigners coming to Somalia at every port of entry covering the whole country. The Immigration Directorate issues Visas that are different in nature depending on the reason for the visit. Below are the types of Visas:

  1. Transit Visa
  2. Business Visa
  3. Tourism Visa
  4. Work Visa
  5. Education and Research Visa
  6. Temporary Residence
  7. Permanent Residence

Reasons different from those mentioned above is considered breach of Somali’s immigration law and anyone caught to be in the country illegally will be prosecuted accordingly.

Updated Entry Visa Issuance Process

The Somali Immigration and Naturalization Directorate is an agency that is responsible of immigration and citizenship services under the Ministry of Internal Security with offices across the different states that make up the Federal Republic of Somalia.

The Directorate issues entry visas to foreigners entering Somalia for work, business, tourism or education. In order to facilitate a smooth and well-understood process, the Directorate has updated its guidelines and requirements to be fulfilled by visitors arriving in Somalia and their local host(s) effective May 10th, 2017.

Staff members belonging to the UN, AU, IGAD, EU, Arab League, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, other regional organizations and Diplomatic Corps will not be affected by these new guidelines. Embassies, UN and Regional Organizations need to make sure that their diplomats, non-diplomats or contractors show identification issued by them. If such identification is not available, they must write a letter requesting entry permit for an individual(s).

Requirements for Host or Inviting Companies and Organizations:

1. Profile of the company or organization and the registration or Incorporation Certificate.

2. Official request letter indicating all pertinent details relating to the invitee (Name, Passport number, Nationality, date of arrival, stay duration) and the purpose of visit. This letter should bear the company or organization letterhead and stamp.

3. Signed indemnity or guarantee letter indicating responsibility for the invitee(s) security, accommodation and upkeep.

Requirements for Government Agencies Inviting or Hosting Foreigners:

1. Official request letter bearing an authorized official’s signature and stamp indicating the invitee’s name, passport number, nationality, date of arrival, stay duration and purpose of visit.

2. Name and contact details of government focal point.

Requirements for Individual Hosts:

1. Personal profile (CV or the personal background).

2. Request letter indicating details of invitee (Name, Passport number, Nationality, Date of arrival, Stay duration) and purpose of visit.

3. Signed indemnity or guarantee letter indicating responsibility for the invitee(s) security, accommodation and upkeep.

4. Copy of National ID or Passport

5. 5. Copy of Company or Business ID.

Requirements for Foreigners Applying for an Entry Visa:

1. Copy of passport with a minimum 6-month validity.

2. Copy of the National ID-card.

3. Company or organization ID-card (If available).

4. Copy of entry permit letter issued by the Immigration and Naturalization Directorate (Upon arrival at the official points of entry).

All documents and visa requests will be handled by the Monitoring and Statistics unit of the Visa and Residence Department on weekdays from 8:00 to 14:30 except Fridays and Saturdays. Process for visa issuance can take from 24 hours to 48 hours given that all required documents are submitted.
